30 DAYS FUND RAISING FOR OUR SCHOOL GARDEN
have just launched a 30 day fund raising campaign for our School Garden at The SEEDMONEY.ORG. Please read on to learn more about my project and how you can help.
Our ‘Learning Garden’ at the Haq Foundation School started blooming in 2014 as a result of a mutual interest of the school management and the Crops in Pots. Crops in Pots is spreading knowledge about kitchen gardening since 2008 and Green Schools is one of its on going programs.
I always have extra seeds. We had a ‘Green Curriculum’ that I developed earlier for another school, the management gave us a part of the garden, their students and a gardener to kick start the project. All we needed was a fence, soil, tools and something to make raised beds from.
Luckily, one of our friend who is an artist was winding up her exhibit and was looking for someone to pick up all the red bricks that she used in her art installation. We took advantage of the opportunity and used our car to bring all the free bricks to the garden. This is how we started this Learning Garden.
For next one year, we continued to take care of the expenses on our own but soon we realized that the number of participants was increasing. Now we had more than 100 students and 30 staff members joining our classes and we were unable to match the growing expenses.
This led us to start selling some of the vegetables from our garden to a restaurant who was very interested in our selection of vegetables and herbs.
We have limited space and was never able to match the quantities needed at the restaurant.
After 3 years, the popularity of the Learning garden has grown greatly. Every student wants to be a part of this garden but we do not have enough resources.
What We Need
Existing garden needs an upgrade urgently as well. Our fences are breaking apart, we need benches and gardening tools. We also want to start cooking in our classes and for that we will need a grill or an electric stove. The garden also needs its own dedicated gardener. We had huge disappointments with the one that school has hired. We need few other thing. Gardening books, seed packs for all students to take back home, supply of pots and organic fertilizers, some garden accessories, netting, bird houses a water feature will complete the garden:)
We are super lucky to have an extremely supportive school management and teachers who are truly the stars.
Looking at the sparkle in their eyes when they harvest their vegetables is something I want to experience all my life. It is very important for me to keep this garden growing and with your contributions we can!
